Outdoor Classrooms

Teaching and Learning Outside the Classroom

Nature Nuts created multiple outdoor learning areas at Shadow Lake Elementary school for teachers to use as well as benefit the school community. Students better absorb and retain knowledge and skills that incorporate their immediate environments using all five senses. Use of outdoor learning spaces to support learning across the curriculum is a Tahoma School district priority.

There are endless opportunities for students to experience outdoor learning at Shadow Lake Elementary. The school grounds have been a designated National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat since 2005.

"Shadow Lake's campus brings learning ALIVE for students. During these experiences students learn to appreciate, care for and protect their environment. The gardens give teachers the tools to enhance the curriculum to meet the needs of ALL learners." --Sue Baldwin, Kindergarten teacher
